Big Brother?

With the next installment of the hit TV show Big Brother now gracing our screens, I am again questioning the relevance to me, and to our community both Christian and non. I find myself intrigued by the opportunity to get a glimpse of people living within a community cage but then again, hesitant because it is not real. It is manufactured, people being coerced into doing things they would normally not do. Why is it that Christians (in general)find this repulsive, should I too? Is there any lessons learned from watching it? Do you have any thoughts? How does it effect you? Dan

Comments:
good questions Doc...I wonder why Christians are generally repulsed by BB but not by being entertained through watching shows about sex crimes (CSI etc)??

I think one of the main focuses of BB is sex (outside of marriage) and 'hooking up' (short term, mid 20's flings). There is an obsession with "Who's gonna GET IT ON in the Big Brother house?!"

Rightly or wrongly, I think these are things that Christians feel uncomfortable with.

However for myself I think that we have a responsibility to a) not judge others and b) love the people in the culture which we live.

I don't feel the need to watch or not to watch Big Brother, and I think the idea that we shouldn't watch the show as Christians is a little... underdeveloped in its ethical philosophy.

And great point Steve :)

I'm not sure that it is sex that draws people to it. When you see an audience made up of young teens or preens, their mums and dads and anyone in between it beggs the question "What is so entertaining" Sure, sex is a big draw card in lots of media but I think it is a bit different here. It is almost predatory, our desire to watch people, zoo like. Are we, generally speaking, a society that is so tired/disenchanted with our own lives that we want to watch others live out theirs? Seeking pleasure through any means possible.

I must say that I am actively boycotting BB this year. I've seen bits adn pieces of it in other years, seeing as I knew people in series 1 and 2. How odd! I just think it appeals to things iwthin us that are not helpful, that are selfindulgent and destructive. There is nothing constructive going on in that house, and unfortunately people are drawn to drarma. The whole point is to cause trouble and have people think that's fun and get attatched to the housemates, with loving or loathing. It just plain annoys me, possibly because I know I could get sucked in if I let myself, even though I hate it in theory.

G'Day Captain America. The BB series has reached our shores and is taking our our TV sets. I must admit that I dont share your love of the show but have seen a few episodes. I dont know if it's the same in the US but it seems to stop a large portion of the nation and becomes the talking point of a lot of conversations. My question remains though, Why is it so interesting and what impact is it going to have on the society that we live in.

I think it grants allowances to people to behave like they see people on tv behaving. It normalises certain behaviours, and they in turn become more socially acceptable. Not cool...

Hehehe... it is to laugh.
